Choosing the Right Wig for You

The reason of wearing a wig depends on the individuals. Some wear wig as a fashion statement, some wear wig just for fun, and some wear wig to cover thinning hair or bald areas. Whatever the reason is, someone should learn how to pick the right wig so that it is a worth buying.

Here are the steps to follow to help you make the best wig choice for you.

Step 1. What is your head size? How to Measure Your Head for a Wig

Before you consider any wig, you must determine the correct size as not all styles are made in each of the 3 major sizes. Most adults wear an Average size, but if you are among the 5-10% who do not, you may have to look a little harder or consider a custom wig sized just for you.

Step 2. What style best fits the shape of your face? The length and style of your wig is the most important factor to complement your face.

The next thing to consider is which style of wig suits the shape of your face. First you need to determine the shape of your face. Once you have followed the few short steps to determine your face shape, you will be able to narrow your search to styles which will maximize your best features and minimize those which are less flattering.

Step 3. What color is best for my skin tone?

What colors show you in your best light? Are you a cool tone? A warm tone? Once you have discovered your best style or styles to show off your face, then determine the best color or colors to lighten and brighten your face – putting it in the best light.

Step 4. What kind of wig /cap do I need?

The next thing to consider is what types of wig suit you best. If you need full coverage due to hair loss or you want to try a different color or style altogether, then you want to choose a full wig. If you want a wig which is the same color as your own for fullness or additional volume, length or curl, then try a ¾ wig or a clip-on wig? A ¾ wig will allow you to have your original hair visible in the front. The ¾ wig blends in behind your hair to look very natural. If you plan to stay with your same hair color, you can comb your hair to the back, tied it and then put on the clip-on wig.

Step 5. What’s best for me: synthetic or human hair?

There are couple of things to consider when deciding between synthetic, human hair or a human synthetic blend.

The first thing to consider is how frequent you want to use the wig. If you intend or need to wear the wig daily, then you will want to choose a higher quality wig. You will want consider the type of wig cap which will be most comfortable – see Step 4 for types of wig caps. You will want to ensure good air circulation to ventilate your scalp so you can wear it for a long time in a day.

The second thing to consider is how you plan or need to style the wig. Human hair offers the ability to color, curl or perm the wig, though more expensive. Synthetic wigs require little or no styling, although the style is set and not very changeable.

Now there is a way to get the best of both worlds, the human hair blends. These wigs are a 50/50 mix of Futura – a high heat resistant kanekalon fiber and human hair. These allow you to curl or straighten the wig while not having to do so, if you don’t want or need to do so.

Most wigs are made with 10 to 30 percent more fiber than your own natural head of hair. Since wigs cannot grow more hair it is better to start with more and have the ability to style it as you need. We recommend that you take your wig to a professional stylist. While wearing your wig, the stylist can cut, trim and even thin your wig to make it your own.
